Steak sizzles in Calgary

Summertime in Calgary offers foodies a smorgasbord of culinary experiences between the Calgary Stampede, Mexifest, Taste of Calgary and plenty of weekend farmers markets.

But, some of the best times spent in Calgary during the summer are the backyard parties and barbecues. Barbecues where friends share smiles, and sometimes tears, over the perfect steak sizzling on the grill.

While Calgarians are enjoying their delicious, perfectly marbled and tender steak, they are contributing to a community that exceeds the company in their backyard. Beef is a vital component to Alberta’s economy. Starting from the first commercial feedlots opening in the 1950’s, to the present day, Alberta is home to 4.9 million beef cattle, 41.6 per cent of Canada’s herd. With cattle come farmers and ranchers, whose resourcefulness and high standards carry over into an appealing product.

Of course, a quality cut of meat is just one part of the equation. From preparation and additional ingredients, to the pan/grill used, all impact whether or not you end up chewing on a hockey puck or melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Either way, when it comes to a good steak some things are a given:

  1. Let steak sit in salt for 45 minutes
  2. Grilling your steak gives the best results
  3. When grilling, don't touch the steak if it's sticking to the grill - that means it's not ready to be turned
  4. Always use tongs when cooking steak, never a fork – puncturing the meat lets out the juices and flavour

If you don’t want to cook, Calgary is home to amazing restaurants. Places like Charcut, Vintage Chophouse and Modern Steak all serve great steak made from Alberta beef, which follows the term farm-to-fork.

For all vegetarians out there, tofu steak makes a perfect substitute for meat with plenty of vitamins and minerals to boot!
