Instagram Influencer | Mariya Stokes

Mariya Stokes is an award-winning singer/songwriter with small-town, country roots. Her fiercely honest songs, bright voice and quick wit moves and engages audiences every time she performs.

Stokes recently gained international recognition when she won two awards for her work, including "2016 International Modern Country Songwriter of the Year" from the North American Country Music Association. Prior to that she was the winner of the Ponoka Stampede Talent Search, a runner up in the Global Country Star Search, and a finalist in the Calgary Stampede Talent Search.

Currently, she is recording her debut single, which is due to be released in early 2018. When she's not working on her own projects, she is also a vocal coach, working with Brian Farrell to mentor aspiring singers of all ages.

Stokes cares deeply about supporting her community and volunteers her time at the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre. She spends much of her time volunteering at the Centre, writing original songs that capture the essence of the community with clients of the centre. The organization released their first album entitled "Shelter From the Storm", in August 2015 and released their second album , "Verses Vs. Homelessness", in June 2016. Stokes track "Lucky" is featured on the album.

What inspired you to take over the lifeincalgary Instagram account?
I thought it would be fun!

Where did you come from and what attracted you to the city?
I am originally from Stavely, Alberta and I moved to Calgary to develop my career as a country artist, because it had a bigger music scene.

What do you do in your spare time? Favourite Calgary past-time or activity?
Checking out live music and going for coffee with friends.

Where is your favorite place to eat or visit in Calgary?

What is a fun fact people wouldn’t know about you?
I love discovering cool cafes and interesting streets around Calgary.

Any tips or advice for Calgary newcomers or those considering a move to Calgary?
Explore! Get out and check out the city.

What do you tell your friends and family from other cities about life in Calgary?
It’s clean and beautiful and has a rad music scene.

Where do you take friends and family when they visit?
Cleaver, The Ironwood.

What do you think is the biggest surprise about Calgary for anyone who isn’t familiar with the city?
There is a ton of great, live music in Calgary.

How has the city influenced who you are or your organization?
It has made me extremely hardworking, appreciative of my roots, and has taught me about the power of an arts community that is collaborative and supportive of one another.
