Maker creative workshops are a craft night for the YYC community where a group of like-minded individuals craving a place and space to make awesome things come together. We facilitate the event providing all supplies, social and loose instruction - it's all about letting your creativity run wild. It gives adults in Calgary the opportunity to rediscover their artist within at the trendiest & best restaurants in our city.
Co-founded by two Calgary natives, we have a true passion for DIY, creativity and bringing people together. Two female entrepreneurs, one business degree, one ACAD visual communications degree, a recession, intense passion and 24 years of friendship gave rise to Maker at the beginning of 2016.
What inspired you to take over the lifeincalgary Instagram account?
We have been following the account for a while and loved seeing our city through different eyes. We thought we could share a unique perspective ourselves.
What has kept you in the city?
There is so much passion and creativity in our city. It is such a resilient place and really feels like you can make a go of anything here if you have the passion and are willing to go for it. There is also an overwhelming amount of support in Calgary.
What do you do in your spare time? Favourite Calgary past-time or activity?
Kickboxing, Calgary Sport and Social (CSSC) recreational sports (kickball and handball), other art workshops, networking--there is never a shortage of things to do or get involved in!
Where is your favorite place to eat or visit in Calgary?
Pho Huong Viet near Westbrook Mall.
What is a fun fact people wouldn’t know about you?
Sarah and I (co-founders) have known each other since Kindergarten (24 years).
Any tips or advice for Calgary newcomers or those considering a move to Calgary?
Get out there! Join meetups that have shared interests, sign up as a single for a rec sport in CSSC, go to events that interest you and you will find your tribe!
What do you tell your friends and family from other cities about life in Calgary?
It is so alive. There are always new and trendy spots opening and entrepreneurs trying new businesses. It's a really exciting place to be.
Where do you take friends and family when they visit?
What do you think is the biggest surprise about Calgary for anyone who isn’t familiar with the city?
Our proximity to the mountains.
How has the city influenced who you are or your organization?
We couldn't have done what we do without the enormous support from strangers whose only interest was wanting to see us succeed. This is an incredible hub for entrepreneurs of all kinds. For instance, the venues we hold our workshops. We were literally greeted with open arms when approaching almost all of the venues we contacted - they were all willing to trust us and give it a try! Attendees at our workshops also keep us so passionate about what we do. Beyond repeat business, we have had guests reach out to offer support and help in anyway. We even had one guest give us gift baskets to congratulate us on what we've accomplished! We truly love this city.
