1. What has kept you in Calgary?
There are a lot of reasons why Helcim is headquartered in Calgary. The city offers great tech talent, a low cost of living for a major city, great amenities, easy access to major transportation routes, and simple tax laws for businesses.
2. What do you tell your friends and family from other cities about life in Calgary?
I tell them how Calgary is changing (as a city) and it’s at a really interesting crossroads. There are a lot more technology companies coming in and other industries are popping up and starting to get attention. It’s a city that is transforming itself and a lot of fun things are coming out of that.
3. Where do you take friends and family when they visit?
Calgary, and the surrounding area, has so many hidden gems and great small businesses. When friends and family visit, we do a tour through some of our favourites. The tour includes a stop at the Saskatoon Farm, Spirit Hills Honey Winery and Eau Claire Distillery in Turner Valley.
4. Where is your favorite place to eat or visit in Calgary?
I like to visit Betty Lou’s Library, it has a cool speakeasy vibe to it which makes it a unique place to stop by for a drink. You go into the basement and give the password to gain entry to the bar.
5. Any tips or advice for Calgary newcomers or those considering a move to Calgary?
I would tell them that Calgary is in a sweet spot as a city. There are 1.4 million people, so it’s big enough that you have a lot of universities and technical schools. If you’re building a business, you can find good talent in the city. But, it’s not so big that traffic is too bad and the cost of living is more reasonable than other big cities.
