Get your game on

Author: Alicia Van Hyfte

There’s nothing like getting together with your friends and family for a good old-fashioned games night.

An evening of Settlers of Catan or Mario Kart is a tried-and-true formula for a night of laughter, fun, and (mostly) friendly competition. Not to mention that games are a great way to relax and temporarily escape from reality… including a reprieve if the weather isn’t optimal.

Lately, Calgarians can’t seem to get enough of gaming and the city is getting on board (pun intended) with the trend as new game-centric restaurants, cafes, bars and shops are popping up around town.

While these new gaming hot spots will require you to leave the coziness of your home, they are a great alternative to cramming everyone into your living room and spending a half-hour searching for the missing Park Place property from your Monopoly game.

Here are a few places you can get gaming in Calgary:

The Sentry Box | 1835 10 Ave SW

Did you know that Calgary is home to the largest  gaming shop in the world? The Sentry Box is stocked with over 100,000 board games, card games, miniatures, roleplaying games, historical games and books. Take a game home with you or stay and play!

Hexagon Board Game Café | 1140 Kensington Rd NW #200

Bringing the community together over coffee and games, the Hexagon Board Game Café is the perfect place to get cozy and get competitive. Hexagon has over 600 board games to choose from, affordable hourly rates, and for those who enjoy a side of wine or beer with their Scategories, the café also has a fully stocked bar.

The Rec Room | 901 64 Ave NE

The Rec Room is a modern social playground and a hub for all things entertainment. Give in to your nostalgia with some classic arcade and video games, or take a break from screen time to perfect your Ping-Pong, shuffleboard and pool skills.

If you’re looking to try something new, head over the VRX car simulator, augmented climbing wall or the virtual golfing suite. Afterwards, you can celebrate your gaming victories with some Canadian-inspired cuisine and enjoy some live entertainment.

Greta Bar | 213 10 Ave SW

Greta Bar is an adult arcade that will make you feel like a kid again. With a game selection that includes Ping-Pong, Skee-Ball, air hockey and other arcade classics, you’re sure to walk out feeling like a winner.

Super Smash Café | 1240 16 Ave NW

The Super Smash Café brings coffee and competition together over video game consoles and controllers. Enjoy some of Nintendo’s greatest hits in an interior that is sure to spark some nostalgia with retro gaming systems, flat screen TVs and comfy couches—just like your parent’s basement back in the day. As Mario would say, “Wa-hoo!”
